Access in Summary


The number 101 bus travelling from the City Centre stops directly outside the Museum on Frederick Street. Please be advised that for a return journey to the City Centre the 101 leaves from nearby Vittoria Street. The Jewellery Quarter Railway Station is also nearby and Metro trains from Birmingham Snow Hill stop here every 10 minutes. There is no public parking at the Museum however there is ample on-street parking available in the surrounding streets which includes free parking and pay at meter parking.

Access at Entrance

The Main Entrance is two iron gates which have a pedestrian gate set in the larger left-hand side gate. Both gates can be opened to offer level access if visitors are unable to access the Pen Room via the pedestrian gate. It is advisable that visitors ring the Pen Room prior to their visit as the gates can only be opened by staff from the inside of the premises.


There is no formal reception at the Pen Room. However, knowledgeable and helpful staff may be found working at desks in the Library and Unit 2. Staff speak a variety of languages including French, German, Italian, Polish and Welsh, some staff are also able to communicate using sign language. Printed guides to the Museum are available in different formats including large print, Braille, French, German and Spanish.


There is an accessible toilet situated in Unit 2 within the Pen Room. The taps and toilet flush are of the correct specification and easy to use. The accessible toilet is fitted with grab rails and an assistance alarm. There is also a wheelchair available at the Pen Room for customer to use if required.

Access to All Areas

The main display areas of the museum are frequently visited by wheelchair users, but unassisted wheelchair users may experience some difficulty negotiating the narrow aisles. A ramp gives access to Unit 2 and there is a short but steep ramp to negotiate a change in level in Unit 3.
