Access in Summary

Public Transport

Buses stop on Great Charles Street Queensway to within 10 metres of the Museum entrance. Further Bus stops on Paradise Street are within 200 metres of the main entrance on Chamberlain Square. There is also another bus stop on the corner of Edmund Street and Margaret Street.

Car Parking/Drop Off

Parking is allowed on a discretionary basis along Chamberlain Square / Edmund Street. Access is via Edmund Street at its junction with Margaret Street. This is strictly controlled by barrier access. Visitors displaying Blue Badges and carrying disabled visitors are permitted to drop off and park where necessary almost directly outside the Museum.

Access into Entrance

There is level entry from the street into the Great Charles Street entrance. This entrance is most appropriate for schools visiting the Learning Zone. At present there is stepped and lift access to the rest of the Museum from this entrance, the lift serves all floors.

There is a main accessible entrance with lift access to all floors is located on Chamberlain Square / Edmund Street side.

The formal main entrance into the Museum is located on Chamberlain Square. There are a number of steps both up to the entrance and then internally to the galleries.

Access to all areas

Lifts within the building provide access to all floors. The lifts are located adjacent to the Edmund Street entrance. A new lift has recently been installed for access to all areas. A platform lift on Edmund Street at the entrance to the Waterhall Gallery provides access into the Waterhall Gallery only.


There are information counters at strategic main circulation areas around the Museum including lift lobbies and the bridge link.

There are reception areas adjacent to all entrances into the Museum.


The Edwardian Tea Room on the second floor of the Museum provides a range of hot and cold food and drinks. The restaurant is self service buffet style however staff are on hand to assist any visitors who may require it.

There is a diverse range of staff at the Museum and Art Gallery reflecting the multicultural society in Birmingham. A number of languages are spoken.


The Museum shop is located on the second floor providing a range of gifts and souvenir opportunities for visitors.

There are accessible toilets located in a number of areas around the Museum including the Gas Hall, adjacent to the Museum shop and at the Waterhall Gallery Entrance. Toilets at the Waterhall Gallery are perhaps the most modern with large cubicles and both left and right hand transfer available.

There are dedicated baby change facilities adjacent to the accessible toilets at the Waterhall entrance and also off of Gallery number 20 on the second floor.
