Access in Summary

Car Park and Drop Off

There are several Car Parks around the University Campus. The closest visitor parking for the Institute is at the South Car Park located on Edgbaston Park Road.

There are accessible spaces which also provide drop off located close to the main entrance on Ring Road North and also directly outside the rear accessible entrance into the Institute.

Transport

Buses stop along Bristol Road within approximately 300 metres of the South Entrance of the University Campus. National railway trains stop at University Station which is around 700 metres from the Gallery.

Access at Entrance

There is a stepped approach to the main entrance of the Institute. An alternative accessible entrance is located by following the service road around to the rear of the building. Visitors are strongly advised to contact the Barber Institute in advance to discuss individual access requirements. This will also allow staff to plan the advance opening of the accessible rear entrance. The telephone number is 0121 414 7333.

The accessible entrance is located to the rear of the building. Visitors are required to use the intercom to gain access as the rear access point is kept locked. The intercom is located to the right of the gates outside the rear service yard. The intercom is at a height which is accessible to most visitors.

There is a designated accessible parking space provided in the drop off area directly outside the alternative accessible entrance.

Reception

The Reception Desk is located immediately to the right upon entry at the Institute entrance. The Reception Desk also provides the service point for the gift shop and refreshment facilities. A portable chip and pin machine is available.

Facilities

Refreshments are available from the Reception Desk and adjacent vending machines. Reception staff are on hand to assist any visitors who may require help. There is a small selection of reference books, souvenirs and gifts also available at the Reception Desk.

The Concert Hall is on the Ground Floor of the building. The seating in the Concert Hall is theatre style and consequently there are steps down towards the stage front. Wheelchair accessible spaces are made available towards the rear of the auditorium which has level access. The Lecture Theatre is also located on the Ground Floor. The room is again arranged in theatre style and therefore has steps down towards the lectern. Wheelchair accessible spaces are available to the rear of the room.

There are four interconnecting galleries on the First Floor of the building. The Galleries house a fine collection of artworks by renowned artists. All galleries have level access and most have seating. The First Floor of the building can be accessed by stairs or alternatively visitors may be accompanied in a passenger lift. Visitors requiring the lift are requested to contact the Reception Desk. The lift is not designed for independent use as security doors restrict access to some areas. There is bench style seating available in most galleries. Gallery Assistants are on hand to provide assistance.

The general toilet facilities are located on the Ground Floor and signposted from the Reception lobby area. The accessible toilet facilities are located on the First Floor in a secure area beside the Galleries. Visitors wishing to access the toilets should contact Reception or gallery staff. A baby change mat is available in the accessible toilet.

Access to All Areas

A passenger lift provides access to all floors of the building. Visitors wishing to access the lift should seek assistance from staff members as the lift is not designed for independent use. A flight of spiral steps provides alternative independent access to the Upper Floor.

All facilities on the Ground Floor have level access gained along wide circulation corridors. The Galleries on the Upper Floor are again all on level access with generous circulation.
